Trenton to Campbellford

Toonie and Sweetie
Last night we stayed at Glen Mills Lock, near Trenton Ontario.  Tonight we are tied right next to a statue of a giant Toonie.  That would be a 10-foot replica of the Canadian $2 coin.  Mounted, of course, on a pedestal.  A Toonie is worth exactly twice as much as a Loonie, the $1 coin.  On one side of the coin there is a polar bear, and on the reverse, Elizabeth II, Her Majest the Queen in Right of Canada.    Only in Campbellford is there a statue of a giant coin.  AND, the bear on the coin is named “Churchill”.  So there you have it folks – one more thing you can learn on the Loop.

Campbellford probably has other fascinating objects and places, but I guess we will wait until tomorrow to find them.   We only found the No Frills grocery market this afternoon in the rain.  Had to walk under the Toonie to get there.

We came through 9 locks today, and beautiful scenery draped in a fine mist for most of the day.  One rain shower found us during one of the locks and another while we walked to the store.  We had fun visiting with the lock keepers today.  We were usually the only ones in the lock but I understand that we will see heavier traffic again in the next few days as it is once again a Canadian Holiday weekend.  This one is the Civic Holiday.  There was no holiday for August so they made this one.

Several of the lock keepers told us to visit the bakery, the beer store and the chocolate factory outlet in Campbellford.  I will try to visit at least one of them while we are here.  Guess which one.  One of the lock keepers knew about Wisconsin – his parents bring their dairy cows for the “world cow judging”, we deduced that this must be the Wisconsin State Fair.

There are many locks here on the Trent Severn waterway – to correspond to the  rapidly increasing height of the river.  That means we are also passing, or bypassing many pretty waterfalls and dams.  Near here there was a 48’ double lock, and across the lock we could see a high canyon with a swinging footbridge.  Underneath were some young people having a picnic.  There were also several fishing parties on shore and lots of folks swimming, canoeing and water-skiing.  It seems that this has been a cool, damp summer in Canada and so 70 degrees on a foggy day brings out all the water sports enthusiasts to enjoy it while they can.

  1. At least you didn't caption the picture "Toonie and Loonie"! Ha. Our weather is remarkably cool for August too ~ still have doors and windows open and there's generally a nice breeze. I've been swimming almost every day and the water in the lake has a nice refreshing chill to it, not typical of late summer. Tomorrow I go to the funeral of the husband of one of my former youth group members. She's a widow and not yet 40, and has a 12 yr old son. I can't imagine. Take care.
