Rice Lake was the early part of our day; it is about 20
miles long and 2 miles wide. A very nice
ride through rolling hills completely covered with big trees. The shores were scattered with cottages and
boat-houses. Then we went down a couple
of long curvy rivers, and came into the Peterborough area through only one
lock. The Lockmaster suggested we come
up to the next lock to tie up for the night, as it was quieter than his location. The lock employees keep very good track of
who is on the water, and where they are headed.
They call ahead to the next lock so they have the doors open, and they
help determine where there will be room to stop for the night.
We arrived at lock #20 around 3 pm to tie up next to two
boats of an extended family. They were
very nice people having a great time – two sets of grandparents, and two young
women with 3 children. We invited the
kids to climb around on our boat as they were looking very curious – and of
course they took us up on the offer.
They were cute and polite. The
two men were involved in an underwater search (a good excuse to jump in and go
swimming). It seems a boat that was here
yesterday lost an underwater scooter and they were hoping to recover it. We loaned them our grappling hook and they
had a hilarious time dragging for treasure – but to no avail.
The lock keeper has informed us that lock #22 is not working, but engineers are working
very hard to fix it. Fortunately we had
not planned to go through that lock for two more days, so it should be no
inconvenience to us.
