The wind was steady this morning, blowing our stern up
against the dock, but other boaters gave a good push to hold us off the dock
and we were on our way. It was sunny and
bright. We got back on some big water as
we cut across a section of Lake Ontario getting from Kingston to Picton,
Ontario. Picton Harbor is down a
protected bay, tucked beneath the hills, and at the bottom of the Main Street
Hill.
The last few days we have been with many Canadian boaters –
and we noticed with some amusement that they refer fondly to the “Quebec Navy”
– all those Quebecois that flood the waterways during the July Construction
Holiday season. If we spoke French we
could probably tell what the Quebec sailors call the English/Canadian
boaters. But everyone is extraordinarily
good natured and helpful. (they are on
vacation after all).
Arriving at Picton fairly early, we walked up the hill and
then Dennis headed off on his bike to go in search of a hardware store and I
walked down Main Street and investigated the shops. I even found a quilt shop. For the more practical information, there is
a grocery store, ice cream store and multiple other shops as well. The hardware store required a 25-minute bike
ride. This little harbor has room for
maybe 4 large boats. We are the only ones here tonight, parked right next to
the fuel dock (yes, they have diesel) the showers and restrooms and the town
boat launch.

It seems that you've been lucky in finding farmers' markets along your journey. I love the fresh produce this time of the year! A yoga friend is bartering her veggies (cukes, squash, peppers, 'maters, green beans, eggplant and more) for a birdhouse and another friend just pops over with a bag of tomatoes out of his garden every now and then. We are rich!
