Still heavily overcast this morning as we departed the dock
at Rawley Resort and Marina a good place to stay more resort than marina, but
we enjoyed our stay. Weather forecast looked favorable clearing around noon,
northwest wind at 10 knots, and light winds for Monday, as good as it gets.
We pulled to the blue line at lock 45 the last on the
Trent-Severn about 8:40 for the 9:00 lock opening. All went well and we locked
through with It Takes Two, Loopers we met in Peterborough who were on their way
to Parry Sound today. At the bottom of the lock the water from the falls rushes
in from both sides at different locations, so first pushed to starboard and
then to port in a narrow passage with 10-15 buoy markers some attached directly
to rocks as we passed under a bridge, keeps you paying attention.
Two miles further, the channel takes a sharp turn to port
through a narrow spot that could only be 50 feet wide, Rich on It Takes Two
knew to make a Securite’ call going through this area, I missed it in all the
information I read. Throughout the day we heard many securite’ calls from other
boaters as they passed various narrow sections. Again without the local
knowledge it was difficult to make the call without knowing the exact location.
At least two boats waited as we cleared various narrow channels.
Lots of granite rocks throughout the Georgian Bay, many with
houses, some on rocks that looked quite bare and uninviting. Tonight we are at
a protected anchorage that is very quiet, just a few houses, trees and rocks. A
good travel day.
