Minim Creek to Harborwalk Marina, Georgetown SC

Shops along Front Street
Very quiet comfortable overnight in the anchorage, a restful evening and 8:00 start this morning. A short cruise 12 miles to Georgetown and the Harborwalk Marina located in the heart of the downtown. A small marina with excellent accommodations and Steve the dockmaster is very helpful and friendly. Three of us came in together and he took care of us all in a professional and orderly fashion.

Georgetown has  history that dates back to the 1700’s, beginning in 1825 rice became their biggest export and at one time all the rice produced in America came from the Georgetown area. Shipbuilding was also a large industry since South Carolina is covered with trees. Of the 19,000 acres in SC, 13,000 are covered with trees today. Lumber production is their largest industry today and Georgetown has a paper mill close to town. A closed steel mill is also present in the harbor.

Many of the homes date to 1790
With shipbuilding and the rice production the Georgetown harbor was a major shipping port with close access to the Atlantic. Front street is their main business district and they have built a harbor walk that provides access for many restaurants and shops.

Some fine architecture is present in their buildings, again we homes that rather than face the street face to the side gardens. In Charleston we saw these porches always on the south side of the building but here we see them in multiple directions. We visited the Rice Museum and a maritime museum, walked through tree lined neighborhoods and enjoyed the pleasant weather.

Another fine touring day.
This house faces north rather than the street
A shrimp boat 1/2 block from the marina, maybe fresh shrimp
Yep, fresh shrimp, tonight's feast
