Heavily overcast with a bit of blue sky once, north wind and
cool 70s. We departed Grand Harbor this morning about 7:30 heading up river
toward Chattanooga. Pickwick Lake is quite enjoyable with lots of homes and
some parks on the river. We traveled in Mississippi for a while and then
crossed into Alabama the river dips into norther Alabama for quite a ways and
then will turn northward as we near Chattanooga. We did not see any commercial
tows until we reached the Wilson Lock, a large tow had been split and the
second half was being pushed out as we arrived. The lockmaster brought down
another pleasure craft and then locked us up a two hour process. We continued
through Wilson Lake but the same tow reached Wheeler Lock before us the process
with a large tow is to split it in half, lock up the first half, then go down
and lock up the second part a 2 ½ to 3 hour process. So we decided to anchor
out at Bluewater Creek this evening, a quiet place with a mix of homes and
trees. We will call Wheeler Lock as soon as we arise in the morning to get in
line. Little Wi-Fi and local TV coverage here. We are still using our paper
charts and iPad for navigation but it is working well so far.
