Palmyra to Spencerport, NY

A rain shortened day, arrived Spencerport about 2:15 tied to the free wall, with in a half hour it began to drizzle and now is raining. Nice facilities here and the Galley Resturant directly across the canal. Towns along this portion of the canal system welcome the boating community providing free electric and showers.

This area of the canal is man made some is dug directly through solid rock, while another portion rests on a hill side. Yesterday, we wondered how the canal is shut down for the winter. If it were in Wisconsin we surmised it would be the best snowmobile race course around. However, we learned they drain the canal. It has a natural water level about 3 ft deep, the other 9 feet is fed from Lake Erie. So in spring they open the gates and feed in new Lake Erie water. Very interesting!!!

Fast Paddlers
We completed 35 miles and 4 locks today for a total lift of 83 feet now at pool height 513 feet and mile marker 270, about 60 miles to Buffalo.

Some kayakers can paddle at 4.6 knots.
