Another beautiful day on the water. On our way before 8:00 and through the first lock about a mile up the river. All the locks now are up locks as we move toward Lake Erie at 569 feet above sea level. Currently, our pool height is 430 feet above sea level so we have a bit to go. Quiet rural setting for the most part on this part of the river, farms with cows (and manure), residential from broken down 1930s to palatial estates. Generally, narrow channels some natural and some dug. Not many boats making this part of the trip and that is too bad since it is quite beautiful and each of the little towns along the river have free tie ups to walls near there downtowns some with showers and free electricity. Really a way to a boaters heart offer free electricity and free tie ups.
So after a shower and some boat work we ate steaks on the
grill with fresh salad. I love my Wegmans!!! About 5 miles from our current
location the chart on our GPS lost all of the details the canal became a very
skinny white line and of course we were not in the white line. But we have our
paper charts, a full set of charts on my laptop and two hand held GPS units
aboard. I called Garmin and determined the previous owner never purchased
charts for the Great Lakes. I spoke with the West Marine guys in Racine and
they determined there was a set of charts that I needed in their warehouse and
a second in Ft. Lauderdale. The warehouse is closer and we will next day air
the charts to the Buffalo store, I love my West Marine!!!
The bridges on this end of the canal can be as low as 15.5’
with the radar arch folded and the bimini top up we calculated we were at least
16’ so we dropped the anchor and folded the tops now we think we are about 14’
6” and are clearing the bridges nicely. But it is a bit warmer and sunnier with
the top down.
All in all a great day on the water and much progress toward
brining Reunion home.
