I’m feeling like we are definitely back on the Great
American Loop. We have picked up some
friends, and we are traveling down the Illinois River in 90+ heat. Today we pulled into the Illinois Valley
Yacht Club at Peoria – exactly 2 years to the day since the last time we were
here. Last night we spent at a lovely
anchorage at Upper Henry Island and it was calm and peaceful. During the day we came south towards Peoria
and saw several boats kicking up Asian Carp – a fun thing to watch as they leap
into the area behind the boats, and other boats come out for the express
purpose of watching, photographing and bow-hunting these crazy big silver fish
that everyone loves to hate. This is a
very pretty area, with nice homes along the Peoria River/Lake. Since it is Labor Day, there were plenty of
families picnicking, boating and swimming along the way. Apparently water skiing has lost its allure
since the Asian Carp came along – if they leap into your body while you are
balanced on a skinny ski at 30 miles per hour – it can get ugly.
The IVY was having their annual cardboard boat races today,
to benefit the Alzheimers Association.
Crazy crafts and enthusiastic crowds made it a very good time. I think they raised about $2200 for their
cause, and had a barrel of fun.
Tonight we had dinner at the clubhouse and did laundry at
the same time. I believe that more white
tablecloth restaurants should have a Laundromat on the side. It’s very efficient to get up between courses
to change the wash over to the dryer.
And after dinner you can carry all the clean clothes back home with you.
