Croton to Rondout Yacht Basin, Kingston NY

After two weather days, the wind was blowing into the marina at 18 knots this morning and I needed to back out of the slip into the wind to a narrow fairway past several boats to get to open water. Awake at 5:00 I began to listen to the dock lines tighten and knew it would be critical to untie the port stern line last and quickly. So I retied the line backwards from the normal cleat arrangement. I tied the working end of the line to the cleat first and then placed the loop over the cleat. In this way, Carol could just remove the loop from the cleat and stow 10 feet of line rather than 40 feet. It worked very nicely and we were able to leave the slip with no bruises to my ego. Thanks Carol!!!

Towns, Railroad tracks and cliffs line the Hudson River
This is a really beautiful part of the trip, the Hudson River is a river valley between two mountain ranges created by glaciers a few years ago, before I was born. Hills to New Yorkers but mountains to us. Beautiful houses set against granite cliffs covered with trees. Everything is green and lovely. We enjoyed seeing Bear Mountain Bridge, formally opened on November 27, 1924, it was the longest suspension span in the world, and the first of its type to have a concrete deck. We passed West Point and thought of Mathew and Ray and Linda from church, it seems to me Mathew will be a senior next year, wow time flies. We saw dragon boat races at Poughkeepsie, they have converted an old railroad bridge to a walking and bike path across the Hudson River, about a mile and a half. This weekend they had a bike rally for New York City bicyclers.  Lots happening on this holiday weekend and we are very pleased to be traveling again. Debi, Tom, Ayla and Adam will join us this evening for dinner and they will sleep on the boat as well, cozy accommodations. We really enjoy having people visit and share our adventure.

  1. It appears that the two of you are a pretty competent pair when it comes to navigating tight spots these days! Are you on track for arriving home in September? I'd guess you're far enough north now to avoid most of the impact of other seasonal storms. Love following your blog!
