Chicago to Joliet

Nice day to travel, warm but not hot until late in the day. We left Burnham about 8:00 and rendezvous with Blue Haven at the Chicago Harbor Lock, their first lock through. Chicago at morning rush hour is a hoot, people scurring every direction, on foot, by bike, on the bus, cabs, trains, water taxi, it all happens in the morning at 8:00. About 45 minutes through the loop is great fun, then the industry begins and again very interesting. The Chicago River and adjoins a 20 mile piece of canal called the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal built in 1890 to change the flow of the river diverting it from polluting Lake Michigan to run down the Des Plaines River into the Illinois river. Chicago is allowed to pump a predetermined amount of water from Lake Michigan to maintain the flow of the Chicago River and adjoining canal. The CalSag Canal joins the Ship Canal and both join the Des Plaines River at Lockport. We arrived at the Lockport Lock about 1:30 and were able to depart the lock about 3:45, commercial traffic has the priority. Tonight there are 5 Loopers here at the Joliet Wall. Lauren, Carol's brother drove down to meet us this evening and the three of us and Lila and Allen from Blue Haven went to dinner at the Tin Roof.
